What can cause an emissions test failure?
Modern emissions systems rely heavily on sensors, computerized engine management and onboard diagnostics. Common problems can include:

How Maryland VEIP Works
Know where testing ends and repair begins.
Eligible Maryland vehicles generally receive an emissions-test notice from the MVA and complete official testing through a VEIP station or eligible kiosk. If the vehicle does not pass, the MVA provides inspection information that can be taken to a repair facility for diagnosis and repairs.

If your vehicle failed its emissions inspection, bring the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Certificate and diagnostic report to Joe’s. The failure information can help our technicians understand which emissions monitors or systems require investigation. We can then perform additional testing, explain the fault and recommend the repairs needed to address the underlying problem.
Maryland repair waiver:
The MVA currently states that eligible vehicles may qualify for a repair waiver after at least $450 in qualifying emissions-related repairs completed within the program’s specified time period. Waiver approval is handled by VEIP and additional conditions apply.

Why diagnose a check engine light before going to VEIP?
An illuminated check engine light usually indicates that the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system has detected a fault. Clearing the light without repairing the problem is not a reliable solution, because diagnostic readiness monitors may reset and require additional driving before the vehicle is ready for testing. Joe’s can diagnose the code, investigate the cause and help determine the correct repair before you head to the emissions station.
