Steady light, flashing light — what is the difference?

A steady check engine light means the vehicle has detected a fault that should be diagnosed. A flashing check engine light can indicate a more serious active problem, such as a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. If the light is flashing or the vehicle is running very poorly, reduce driving and arrange an evaluation promptly.

Do not diagnose by code alone.

Replacing the component named in an internet code description can waste money when the real cause is wiring, a vacuum leak, another sensor, a mechanical issue or a related system fault.
