On many rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, the driveshaft carries power from the transmission or transfer case to the differential. Universal joints allow that shaft to operate through changing angles as the suspension and drivetrain move. When U-joints, carrier bearings or the driveshaft itself wear, you may hear clunks, feel vibration or notice shuddering under load. Common Symptoms

What can worn U-joints or a driveshaft problem feel like?

Because the driveshaft rotates with vehicle speed and transfers engine torque, problems often show up as vibration or noise. Common symptoms include:

  • Clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse
  • Vibration at highway speed
  • Shuddering during acceleration
  • Squeaking at low speed
  • Knocking from underneath the vehicle
  • Excessive play in U-joints
  • Loose or worn carrier bearing
  • Visible driveshaft damage
  • Driveline vibration under load
  • Noise during acceleration or deceleration
  • Wear around driveshaft couplings

Universal Joints

U-joints allow torque to move through an angle.

Universal joints sit at driveshaft connection points and allow the shaft to continue rotating as drivetrain angles change. Needle bearings inside the joint allow smooth movement, but wear, corrosion or loss of lubrication can create looseness or binding.

A driveshaft spins quickly, so bending, impact damage, missing balance weights or incorrect installation can create vibration that becomes more noticeable as road speed increases. Worn U-joints and center support bearings can produce similar symptoms, which is why the full shaft assembly should be inspected.

Speed-related vibration deserves diagnosis.

Tire and wheel problems are common vibration sources, but a driveline vibration can worsen with continued driving. If the vibration changes with acceleration or load, the driveshaft and joints should be considered.

Carrier Bearings & Multi-Piece Shafts

Some vehicles use a center support bearing between driveshaft sections.

Longer driveshaft assemblies may use two or more shaft sections supported by a carrier bearing. When the bearing or its rubber support wears, the shaft can move excessively and create vibration, thumping or noise. Joe’s can inspect the support along with the U-joints and shaft condition.

Driveshaft vs. Axle

Both transfer power, but they do different jobs.

A driveshaft usually transfers torque lengthwise through the vehicle from the transmission or transfer case to a differential.
