On many rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, the driveshaft carries power from the transmission or transfer case to the differential. Universal joints allow that shaft to operate through changing angles as the suspension and drivetrain move. Because the driveshaft rotates with vehicle speed and transfers engine torque, problems often show up as vibration or noise. Common symptoms include:
Universal joints sit at driveshaft connection points and allow the shaft to continue rotating as drivetrain angles change. Needle bearings inside the joint allow smooth movement, but wear, corrosion or loss of lubrication can create looseness or binding.

Longer driveshaft assemblies may use two or more shaft sections supported by a carrier bearing. When the bearing or its rubber support wears, the shaft can move excessively and create vibration, thumping or noise. Joe’s can inspect the support along with the U-joints and shaft condition.
A driveshaft usually transfers torque lengthwise through the vehicle from the transmission or transfer case to a differential.
