Emissions & Readiness

A check engine light can also affect Maryland emissions testing.

An active check engine light or incomplete onboard readiness monitors can prevent a passing emissions result. Clearing codes immediately before testing is not a reliable fix because the monitors may reset to “not ready.” Joe’s can diagnose and repair the underlying fault and explain what needs to happen before the vehicle returns for official Maryland VEIP testing.

Important:

If the vehicle is shaking badly, overheating, losing oil pressure or showing another serious warning along with the check engine light, stop driving as soon as safely possible and have the vehicle evaluated.

After the Repair

Clearing the light is not the same as fixing the problem.

Once the underlying issue is repaired, diagnostic codes can be cleared when appropriate. The vehicle may then need to complete normal drive cycles so the onboard monitors can run again. If the repair is successful, the warning should remain off and the affected system should operate normally.
