Common Axle Problems

What symptoms can point to axle or CV-joint trouble?

Axle problems often become noticeable while turning or accelerating. Common signs include:

  • Clicking or popping during turns
  • Vibration during acceleration
  • Clunking when changing direction
  • Grease around the inside of a wheel
  • Torn or cracked CV boots
  • Shuddering under load
  • Axle seal leaks

Why CV joints are built to move while transferring power.

CV joints allow the axle to transmit torque at changing angles as the wheels steer and the suspension moves up and down. The joints are packed with grease and protected by flexible rubber or synthetic boots.

Boot Repair vs. Axle Replacement

Timing matters when a CV boot tears.

If a damaged boot is found early and the joint remains clean and quiet, boot replacement may sometimes be possible. Once contamination enters the joint or clicking begins, replacing the complete CV axle is often the more practical repair because the joint has already started to wear.

Do not ignore grease around the wheel.

Grease flung onto the suspension, wheel or inner fender can indicate a torn CV boot. Catching the problem early may help prevent further joint damage.

Axle Replacement

Both sides do not automatically need replacement.

Unlike some maintenance items, axle assemblies are generally replaced based on condition. If one side has a torn boot, worn joint or damaged shaft, the other side can remain in service if inspection shows it is healthy. Joe’s checks both sides and recommends only the work that is needed.
