The heater depends on hot engine coolant flowing through the heater core and the HVAC system directing air across it into the cabin. If either coolant flow or airflow control is interrupted, cabin heat can become weak or disappear completely.

Check for cooling-system symptoms too:

If the heater stops working and the temperature gauge begins rising, coolant may be low or circulation may be poor. That can become an overheating problem and should be inspected promptly.
