Can you use any automatic transmission fluid?
No. Modern transmissions can require highly specific fluids with different viscosity and friction characteristics. A conventional automatic, CVT and dual-clutch transmission may each require completely different fluid.
Do not choose transmission fluid by color or by a generic “universal” label alone. Verify that the fluid meets the vehicle manufacturer's exact specification before adding or replacing it.
Is changing transmission fluid the same as flushing it?
Not necessarily. A drain-and-fill removes the fluid that drains from the transmission and replaces it with the correct fresh fluid. A fluid exchange may replace a larger percentage of the old fluid, depending on the equipment and procedure.
The appropriate service depends on the transmission design, maintenance history, fluid condition and manufacturer guidance. A power flush should not automatically be treated as the correct procedure for every transmission.
