Can I Drive My Car If It's Overheating?

What Can Happen If You Keep Driving?

Six ways overheating can damage the engine.

What to Do Right Away

If the car starts overheating, take these steps.

  • Turn off the air conditioning
  • Turn on the heater only if needed briefly to help move heat while reaching a safe stopping point
  • Move out of traffic and park safely
  • Shut the engine off
  • Let the engine cool completely
  • Do not open a hot radiator or coolant pressure cap
  • Look for obvious coolant leaks only after the vehicle is safely cooled
  • Arrange towing or roadside assistance if overheating returns

Rapid temperature changes can damage hot engine components. Let the engine cool and address the underlying cooling-system problem properly.

Can You Drive After It Cools Down?

Cooling down does not mean the problem is fixed.

An overheated engine may temporarily return to a normal temperature after sitting, but the original cause—low coolant, a leak, thermostat failure, fan problem, water-pump issue or radiator restriction—may still be present.

If the temperature rises again:

Stop driving and arrange towing. Repeated overheating cycles increase the chance of engine damage.

What If You Only Need to Go a Few Miles?

There is no guaranteed safe distance for an overheating engine.

If the temperature is already in the hot zone, even a short drive can make the problem worse. The amount of damage depends on coolant level, circulation, engine load, ambient temperature and how hot the engine has become.

The safest choice is to stop and have the vehicle transported rather than trying to “make it home” or reach the shop under its own power.
